The esteemed Calabrian PGI Clementines, cherished fruits with a history deeply embedded in the inland areas of Calabria, hold a prominent position due to their cultivation dating back to 1950. Flourishing in the Calabrian soil, characterized by a mild and consistent climate, these citrus gems showcase their exceptional qualities.

Clementines, a delightful hybrid of bitter orange and common mandarin, stand out as the most lucrative citrus variety, prized for their early ripening and delectable taste. Ripening as early as October, Clementines boast a distinctive feature – seedless pulp that is abundant in vitamins, aromatic notes, and sweetness. With a high concentration of vitamin C and essential minerals like potassium, consuming just a few of these fruits a day fulfills the daily nutritional requirements for adults.

The Consortium's crucial role in safeguarding quality

Founded in May 2002 through the joint efforts of local trade organizations and select cooperatives of producers, entrepreneurs, and packers, the Consortium for the Protection of Calabrian PGI Clementines encompasses 61 municipalities across the provinces of Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, Cosenza, Vibo Valentia, and Crotone. Its ambitious mission is to enhance the value of local productions adhering to the specifications outlined in the production regulations.

At the core of its operations, the consortium assumes a vital role in coordinating activities aimed at upholding a high-quality standard in citrus production. Actively overseeing each phase of the process, the consortium ensures that affiliated producers and packers adhere to the production regulations.

From overseeing the smooth and dark orange outer skin to choosing appropriate lands, each phase is meticulously executed to uphold the authenticity and goodness of the product. Planting arrangements, pruning techniques, and cultivation methods are all carefully regulated to ensure top-quality production

Ultimately, the marketing of Calabrian clementines occurs through packages weighing at least 0.5 kg, adequately sealed to maintain their freshness. This precaution is taken to assure the end consumer of the authentic quality of a product that originates and thrives in the geographical expanse of the Calabrian territory.
